Lighthouse photography is a natural outgrowth of my travels throughout Michigan - the state with the most lighthouses. I lived as a child on the coast of Maine, waking up to foghorns in the morning. My great grandfather was a lighthouse keeper in northern Denmark, and he was decorated by the king for leading a crew that saved many lives. We are losing lighthouses as new navigation technologies replace these grand beacons of the past, and I want to photograph as many as I can while they are still in good condition. They are a significant part of our national history. As you hunt for lighthouses up and down the Great Lakes coasts, please follow "leave-no-trace" principles: take only photos and leave only footprints. Be careful not to bring any non-native species, and pack out your trash.
